Urbano VIII tachó con propia mano el título “De las mareas” que pretendía Galileo y además del título le impuso dos condiciones para su publicación. Galileo desobedeció la primera condición (no dar importancia al fenómeno de las mareas) y cumplió la segunda, pero la cumplió rematadamente mal. El autor aporta documentos, algunos descubiertos hace poco, que confirman que el papa dirigió personalmente el proceso contra Galileo. Sugiere que el papa pudo utilizar a su amigo como chivo expiatorio (capro espiatorio) para calmar al cardenal español Gaspar Borgia quien le acusó en un Consistorio Secreto de connivencia con los herejes, tal como se desprende de un manuscrito de noventa folios encontrado en la BN. La biografía demuestra, en detrimento del “mito mártir”, que el papa le preparó “bajo la máscara de religión” un proceso de lujo en el que no faltó una refiada venganza personal. El autor explica el error de Galileo al empecinarse en demostrarlos movimientos de la Tierra basándose en los fenómenos de las mareas y de la inexistente aura perpetua. Error tan escandaloso como para que se le califique de “skeleton in the cupboard” (esqueleto en el armario) del padre de la ciencia moderna.
