burg Address to the country on the American Civil War battle where the president gave his inspirational but rather succinct speech.Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States from March 1861 until he was assassinated in April 1865. He was also an American statesman and attorney. He led his country through the bloodiest battle, the Civil War, and also the United States' highly moral, constitutional, and political crisis. He upheld the Union which refers to the United States of America during the American Civil War, put an end to slavery, enhanced and bolstered the federal government, and made improvements to the economy.Lincoln was born in Hodgenville, Kentucky, he grew up on the western frontier in Kentucky and Indiana. He was widely educated and became a lawyer in Illinois, a Whig Party leader, and was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives. He established improvements to the economy through banks, tariffs, and railroads. He became a leader in the newly created Republican Party in 1858. He took part in a series of highly publicized debates with his rival, Democrat Stephen A. Douglas, Lincoln was against slavery, but he was not elected at the United States Senate. He regained confidence when he was elected president in 1860 although the Southern citizens gave him little support, he got a majority of supporters from the North which led to his victory. Lincoln has been one of the greatest presidents of the United States.
